Join us as we explore the heart of Alabama, and its legacy of the civil rights movement...indulge in Southern cuisine and gain insight into pivotal moments in history! A three-night stay at the Drury Inn Birmingham will make a great headquarters for this fascinating look at one of our most influential states!
Day 1: We depart this morning for our drive south and arrive in Birmingham to check into the Drury Inn & Suites for our three-night stay. Tonight, we will enjoy the Kick-Back Reception at the Drury and the evening is at our leisure. KB
Day 2: Today we will tour Birmingham! We will visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, a cultural and educational research center that promotes a comprehensive understanding of the significance of civil rights in Birmingham. For lunch on your own explore the Five Points South neighborhood, a cultural hub brimming with history, charm, and an impressive selection of eateries. The afternoon finds us with our step-on-guide experiencing the pivotal role Birmingham had in the Civil Rights Movement. History comes to life as we visit the 16th Street Baptist Church, tragically known for the 1963 bombing that claimed the lives of four young girls, galvanizing the movement for equality. Hear stories of resilience and courage as you walk through Kelly Ingram Park, a powerful outdoor museum featuring sculptures and memorials that depict the struggles and triumphs of those who fought for justice. Dinner this evening is at Dreamland BBQ, a beloved southern institution for its mouthwatering ribs, savory BBQ sauce and authentic Alabama charm. We’ll return to the hotel after a unique day of sightseeing. B, D
Day 3: We depart bright and early after breakfast for Montgomery where we will meet our local guide and get ready for a day you will never forget! Our tour starts with a driving tour of historical sites around Montgomery where you will learn beyond the textbooks to see exactly where key points in history happened. We will stop at Rosa Parks Museum, National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and Parsonage. Lunch will be on your own as you explore downtown Montgomery. We will return to Birmingham after a great day in Montgomery. Dinner is included tonight. B, D
Day 4: After our included breakfast we will depart for our return trip home. Plan to arrive this evening with an understanding of all that makes the state of Alabama memorable! B
