Day 1 We’ll depart this morning and travel to Ashland, Kentucky where we will begin the journey of following the 60-year career of the Coal Miner’s daughter, Mrs. Loretta Lynn. We’ll start at the historic Paramount Arts Center where native Loretta Lynn brought her singer-songwriter style of country music to the stage several times over her career. We’ll enjoy a catered lunch at Central Park, considered the “Crown Jewel” of the Ashland Park system. A highlight will be a live acoustic performance by a local musician with lunch. Next we visit the Highlands Museum where you can create your own music on the Karaoke Korner stage or at the Music Quilt, an interactive sound sculpture. This afternoon we drive by the Judd family home place of Ms. Polly Judd, mother of Naomi Judd. Then stop at the Keith Whitley Memorial. We’ll check into our Pikesville, Kentucky hotel for a two-night stay before enjoying an included dinner and live entertainment from Coaltown Dixie, an all-female bluegrass band hailing from the picturesque Appalachian hills of East Kentucky. Day 2 Today we will meet our local guide and visit the US 23 Country Music Highway Museum with over 14 exhibits including Loretta Lynn, Chris Stapleton, Dwight Yoakum, Billy Ray Cyrus, Tom T. Hall, Keith Whitley, Crystal Gayle, the Judds and more. We’ll tour the Mayo Memorial United Methodist Church with an organist on hand to demonstrate the organ sound and how the air is pumped from the basement to the chamber of the organ for sound. Next, we tour the Coal Miner’s Museum with a soup and sandwich lunch and a local artist performing while we eat. This afternoon begins with Loretta Lynn’s Butcher Holler and Webb’s General Store. The store is over 100 years old and is currently owned by Loretta Lynn’s niece, Connie Webb. Then it’s time to visit Butcher Holler, Loretta’s birthplace and family home. This evening we head to the Appalachian Center for the Arts for dinner and a Radio Stage Play from 1944 about the Hatfield and McCoys. Return to the hotel after a great day. B,L,D
Day 3 We’ll depart and travel to Harlan County to the Kentucky Coal Museum. Not only does the museum tell the story of coal, but it also reflects on the miner’s lifestyle, what it meant to live in the closely protected confines of a mountain community, and the ways in which mining families entertained themselves. We’ll then learn the history of Lynch, Kentucky with a History of Port 31 Tour. Today many of the buildings, including a tipple, and a mine portal are part of a coal mining museum complex. Lunch will be included at the Pine Mountain Grill with a local musician to serenade us. We’ll depart for home, planning to arrive early this evening with wonderful stories to tell about Loretta Lynn’s Eastern Kentucky home. B,L
