The Story of America is seen everywhere in our local area. The John Rankin House is a historic house museum in Ripley, Ohio and was one of the original stops on the Underground Railroad. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s visit to Rankin provided some of the story that became Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Serpent Mound is a National Historic Landmark built by the ancient American Indians of Ohio. Serpent Mound’s Indigenous builders created the mound in alignment with the sun’s cycle and it is of great significance as a sacred American Indian site. At Tecumseh! witness the epic life story of the legendary Shawnee leader as he struggles to defend his sacred homelands in the Ohio country during the late 1700’s. Tecumseh! has been labeled as one of the most mesmerizing outdoor dramas in the nation. Our visit to Heritage Farm highlights another part of the American Story…the Appalachian region and early pioneer life. Don’t miss the bus for this getaway tour that will tell the Story of America and renew our faith in ourselves and honor our American heritage!
Day 1: We will depart this morning and set our sights for our visit to the John Rankin House in Ripley. Enjoy the story of John Rankin who is reputed to have been one of Ohio’s first and most active “conductors” on the Underground Railroad. We will enjoy a boxed lunch in the area before departing for Serpent Mound in Peebles. This effigy mound in the form of a snake with a curved tail has become an icon of Indigenous cultural achievements, primarily because of its enormous scale. This afternoon we will check into our hotel in Chillicothe before departing for Tecumseh! outdoor drama. We will include a backstage tour, dinner and of course, the most acclaimed outdoor drama in America! What a great day celebrating a part of the Story of America! L,D
Day 2: We’ll depart after breakfast for our drive to Huntington, WV, and arrive mid-morning at the Heritage Farm and Museum. You are sure to enjoy the day seeing life through the eyes of the pioneers who settled in Appalachia. Experience exhibits, interactive folk crafts, and watching artisans at work. A delicious lunch will be included today. We’ll depart for home this afternoon with a feeling of great pride in America and the stories the places we visited had to tell! B, L
