Springtime in the Deep South is Magical.  Experience the charm, history, and beauty of historic river towns such as Natchez and New Orleans.  American history comes alive in Vicksburg and River Road, which will lead us to the very heart of Cajun Country.  Don’t miss the bus this spring and join us on this South Pilgrimage to experience first-hand life in the deep south.

Day 1:   We set our sights for the South today, coming to rest this evening in Memphis.

Day 2:   Our travels today take us first to Vicksburg, a sleepy river town that retains much of its antebellum charm.  This afternoon we will enjoy a guided tour of the famous Vicksburg National Military Park which commemorates the campaign, siege and defense of Vicksburg. Then, we will travel south along the River Road, the path settlers and soldiers followed along the banks of the Mississippi.  Soon we will reach Natchez, a river town rich in history and culture.  As we ride through town, see many fine examples of graceful pre-Civil War homes.  We’ll check into our local hotel and then, experience the distinctive flavor of Natchez cooking at a local favorite restaurant.  B, D

Day 3:   This morning we will stop at Frogmore Cotton Plantation and Gins.  Here we join a costumed guide and get insight into the contrasts between a working cotton plantation of the early 1800’s and a modern cotton plantation and gin of today.  We’ll then travel further south to Lafayette, the “Capital of Acadiana,” in the very heart of Cajun Country.  Right in the heart of Lafayette sits the Vermilionville Historic Village, a living history museum.  Here we will get to know the history of Louisiana as you explore the 23-acre village.  Discover several 18th-19th century restored homes and meet costumed artisans who demonstrate trades of that period.  We will check into our Lafayette accommodation and enjoy an included dinner and Cajun entertainment. B, D

Day 4:   This morning, we travel deeper into Cajun Country and visit the Tabasco Sauce Factory on Avery Island where we’ll learn about the growing, crushing, aging and bottling process of this famous pepper sauce.  We’ll take time to shop for some of their fine products at the company gift shop nearby. Next, we pass through New Iberia, Franklin, and Morgan City to the real authentic Cajun country where we will board our Louisiana Cajun Swamp boat for a tour, hoping to see alligators and other bayou wildlife.  What a thrilling tour!  This afternoon we will arrive in the grand city of the Bayou, New Orleans!  We will check into our hotel for a two-night stay with time to refresh before our included dinner in the Jax Brewery area.  Time for some browsing the area before returning to the hotel. B, D

Day 5:   We start our day with a historic tour of New Orleans and surrounding areas! From the deck of the boat you will enjoy a spectacular view of the city plus enjoy an included lunch. This afternoon, we meet our knowledgeable local guide for a grand tour of New Orleans. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore the shops at Riverwalk, the French Market, and perhaps try coffee and beignets at the Café du Monde.  B, L

Day 6:   Early today we depart New Orleans and travel along the picturesque Gulf Coast through Gulfport.  Late this morning we visit beautiful Bellingrath Gardens, known as the Garden Spot of the South.  The 800-acre estate consists of virgin forests and some 75-acres of planted gardens by the river.  We spend our final night in Birmingham where we will enjoy the Drury kick-back.  B

Day 7:   We drive home today planning to arrive back early this evening after a great visit to Cajun Country on this Spring Pilgrimage to the deep south.  B
