Sensational Shows along the Crooked Road
Abingdon and Wytheville, VA

August 25-29, 2026
Tour Number R5414
5 Days - 4 Nights - 7 Meals - 2 Shows

On this new tour we will travel to the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Appalachian Mountain Range of Southwest Virginia and the cultural center of Virginia’s Crooked Road.  Abingdon is known for its historic charm, artsy vibe, and famous Barter Theatre.  We’ll snap a photo at the “golden line” between Virginia and Tennessee.  Bristol, VA., is boasted as the birthplace of country music. Wytheville, nestled in the scenic mountains is home of the Wohlfahrt Dinner Theatre. Let’s travel together and discover for ourselves the sensation known as the Crooked Road.

Day 1:   Today we will head for the Blue Ridge Mountains and Abingdon, Virginia.  With stops for rest and lunch on the way, this will be the location of our lodging for the next three evenings.  Dinner will be included at a local restaurant this evening.  D

Day 2:   After breakfast, our morning begins with a tasting tour at Abingdon Olive Oil Co. Beginning with a variety of pairings while learning the history, health, and cooking benefits of olive oil, and ending with a taste of ice cream for a little sweetness. Afterwards, we will enjoy a matinee show at the Barter Theatre, one of the longest running professional theatres in the nation and considered the State Theatre of Virginia. The musical, COME FROM AWAY, is based on events in the Newfoundland town of Gander during the week following the September 11 attacks, when 38 planes carrying 7,000 passengers were ordered to land unexpectedly at the Gander International Airport.  This highly acclaimed musical tells us their story.  Dinner will be included at a local restaurant this evening. B, D

Day 3:   It’s another great day in the Virginia mountains!  Following breakfast, we will head to Bristol, VA.  We will tour the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, which tells the story of our music heritage, and continues to influence music around the world. In 1998, Congress designated Bristol the official “Birthplace of Country Music”.  The Museum tells the story of the musical and cultural heritage of the region, its role in the birth and development of country music, and its influence on music around the world. After our visit to the Museum, we will visit downtown State Street for a vibrant experience! This lively area is filled with unique shops and local eateries.  For lunch you will have a choice of various local restaurants.  Later we will stand in both states at once along the “The Golden Line”, a perfect photo op!  Returning to Abingdon we will arrive at the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center, the gateway and introduction to discovering the unique people, places, and stories of the most beautiful region in America.  Here you will find a Marketplace, retailing the art and craft of over 180 artisans from Southwest Virginia, explore the Visitors Center and listen to the sounds of the region, the birthplace of American Country music.  Dinner will be on your own this evening.  B

Day 4:   After breakfast we will depart for a lovely ride to Wytheville, nestled into the scenic Appalachian Mountains.  We will arrive to discover Edith Bolling Wilson’s Birthplace and family home and step into history, one of only eight sites in the nation dedicated to sharing the stories of America’s First Ladies.  Explore the remarkable journey of Edith Bolling Wilson, from Wytheville to the White House.  Edith was often referred to as “the First Woman President”, playing a vital role in shaping American history during World War I.  From her humble beginnings to her extraordinary influence in the White House, her story will surprise and inspire you.  Other points of interest in downtown Wytheville will be the town’s smallest church and the Big Pencil.  We’ll check into our local hotel this afternoon and refresh for a delightful evening at Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre…so listen up, all you jive turkeys – grab your leisure suits and boogie shoes and hustle on down to Wohlfahrt Haus for The Sensational 70s. Featuring the best music from the top genres of the decade – Rock, R&B, Soul, Funk, and Disco- you’ll be transported back to the days of flared jeans, bold patterns, and good times.  The Sensational 70s is the ultimate trip down memory lane from the decade that gave you Boogie Fever.   Enjoy the evening! B, D

Day 5:   After breakfast we will depart for our journey home.  With stops for rest and lunch enroute, plan to arrive home early evening with wonderful memories of Virginia’s Crooked Roads and sensational shows! B
