August 16-21, 2027
Tour Number R7463
6 Days - 5 Nights – 9 Meals
Take a break from the world this summer and immerse yourself in the “Crown Jewels of Lake Superior”, the Apostle Islands. Experience these scenic archipelago gems by land and water, marveling at the famous red sandstone sea caves, crystal-clear waters, scenic overlooks with lush greenery, historic lighthouses, and nature-carved rock formations. It is said that the Apostle Islands were named by the Jesuits, who enjoyed giving Holy Names to new places. Come explore with us like fur traders and discover this distant land on America’s North Shore.
Day 1: We’ll depart this morning looking forward to the natural beauty and spectacular scenery that awaits us. This evening, our overnight stay is near Madison, Wisconsin.
Day 2: This morning, enjoy our drive to scenic Northern Wisconsin. Off the coast of Lake Superior, at the tip of Wisconsin’s Bayfield Peninsula, lies a breathtaking collection of 22 island jewels known as the Apostle Islands, home to stunning rock formations and six historic lighthouses. Our first stop will be at the Northern Great Lakes Visitors Center. This beautiful visitors center is a vibrant place to learn about the Lake Superior Region. You’ll find interactive exhibits, a five-story observation tower and more. Tonight, dine at a local restaurant prior to checking in for our three-night stay at our hotel, situated along Lake Superior’s peaceful coast. B, D
Day 3: This morning, we’ll travel to Bayfield and set sail on a relaxing cruise through the breathtaking Apostle Islands. The islands were named by missionaries who believed there were 12 islands—but there are actually 22! Sparkling clear waters, historic lighthouses, spectacular sea caves, extraordinary rocky outcrops, captain’s stories, and informative commentary are part of this memorable experience. Enjoy lunch at the elegant Victorian Old Rittenhouse Inn. Return to Ashland to join a local guide who will share stories and the history of this quaint town. After enjoying some time to explore on your own, the rest of the evening is yours to enjoy at your leisure. B, L
Day 4: This morning, we will take a ferry to Madeline Island, the only Apostle Island that is inhabited year-round. Visit the historic local museum before exploring this lovely island with a local guide who will share the joys and challenges of year-round island living – even in the winter! After lunch at a local pub, enjoy leisure time on this picturesque island before we catch the ferry back to the mainland. B, L
Day 5: This morning, we will bid farewell to the scenic shores of Lake Superior and journey south as we are transported to the Alps in New Glarus, the “Little Switzerland” of America. Here we will enjoy a Swiss-themed dinner and overnight stay. B, D
Day 6: This morning our sights are set toward home. We plan to arrive this evening with wonderful memories, photos, and stories to share with family and friends. B
