Newport, Rhode Island, known as America’s first resort town, will charm you with its historic buildings, restored homes and fabulous mansions along tree-lined avenues. Block Island, known as Little God’s Island by the Narragansett Indians is just 10 square miles protected by lighthouses and spectacular bluffs that also offer breathtaking views. Don’t miss the bus, the boat or the lobster on this popular tour to Newport, RI, America’s first Resort town!
Day 1: We will depart bright and early this morning, anxious to begin our summer adventure. It’s eastward bound as we cross Ohio’s rolling fields and the picturesque mountains of Pennsylvania. This evening we will overnight near Allentown, PA.
Day 2: We will depart after breakfast and this afternoon be welcomed to Rhode Island, the “Ocean State” by our local guide who will narrate a driving tour of Newport, America’s first Resort town. Enjoy the charm of Newport’s historic buildings and restored homes with over 150 points of interest. Take in the rugged beauty of Ten-Mile Ocean Drive and the fabulous mansions along tree-lined Bellevue Avenue. After checking into our hotel for our three-night stay we will enjoy an included dinner together. B, D
Day 3: Today we will include a visit to Marble House, a Gilded Age mansion that was built from 1888 to 1892 as a summer cottage for Alva and William Kissam Vanderbilt. Lunch will be included in Newport before visiting the Breakers Mansion, the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages” and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America. Later we will depart on the “Amazing Grace” for a one-hour Harbor Cruise. This harbor tour shows Newport off at its picture-perfect best. It offers close-up views of the lighthouse, Grand Estates and more. Enjoy the historic downtown waterfront filled with cobblestone shopping wharves, specialty shops and restaurants. B, L
Day 4: After breakfast we will depart for Point Judith to board the ferry to Block Island. There will be time for lunch and browsing on your own before our 90-minute sightseeing tour. A traditional LOBSTERBAKE dinner is included on the porch of the Historic National Hotel. After dinner we will board the ferry for our return to the mainland. B, D
Day 5: We’ll depart this morning after breakfast and enjoy our drive through Pennsylvania. This evening we will overnight near Carlisle, PA. B
Day 6: Breakfast will be included before we set our sights for home. We will arrive early evening filled with wonderful memories to share with family and friends about our Rhode Island experience! B
