Newport, Rhode Island, is a premier New England coastal destination known as the “City by the Sea”, famous for its Gilded Age mansions, historic waterfront, and lovely Ocean Drive. A highlight of this tour will be a visit to the Newport Flower Show, a milestone event that features exquisite floral exhibits inspired by the rare beauty and hidden treasures of the City by the Sea.
Day 1: We will depart bright and early this morning, anxious to make our way toward Rhode Island and lovely Newport! Our overnight stay will be near Allentown, PA.
Day 2: We will depart for Newport, planning to arrive early afternoon. Our first stop will be at Newport Vineyards to join wine educators for a Tour and Tasting Experience! Learn about Newport Vineyards history, winemaking, and a bit about the on-site brewery Taproot Brewing Co. Then enjoy a tasting of 4 wines at the “standing bar”. After our wine tasting we will check into our Newport hotel, situated along the sandy beach, for our two-night stay. Relax, unpack and get acquainted with the amenities of your hotel. Tonight’s dinner will be at your leisure. B
Day 3: Enjoy a full breakfast at the hotel this morning. We will meet our local guide for the Newport Mansions Driving Tour of Ten Mile Ocean Drive and along the sea where the most famous of the “American Aristocracy” built their splendid summer palaces. Here, the Vanderbilts and the top 400 of U.S. society and wealth congregated during the summer months. Today we will visit the Green Animals Topiary Gardens, a small country estate that consisted of seven acres of land, with a white summer clapboard, farm, outbuildings, a pasture and vegetable garden. Now a Topiary Garden boasts more than 35 formal flowerbeds, geometric pathways, arbors, fruit trees, and vegetable and herb gardens. You will have lunch on your own and free time for shopping in Newport. This afternoon, enjoy a self-guided tour of the Breakers Mansion, Home of President and Chairman of New York Central Railroad, Cornelius Vanderbilt II. This 70-room, Italian Renaissance-style palazzo boasts a display of rich marbles, exquisite mosaic tile floors & ceilings, and is topped off by panoramic ocean views. The focal point of The Breakers is the Great Hall. The mansion has a storied past and is magnificently decorated. Tonight’s dinner is included at one of Newport’s most popular restaurants. After dinner, we will return to the hotel for the evening. B, D
Day 4: After our included breakfast and check-out, we will travel to Rosecliff Mansion for the Newport Flower Show. This milestone event will feature exquisite floral exhibits inspired by rare beauty and hidden treasures of Newport. We will depart after lunch on our own for our overnight destination this evening. A farewell dinner will be included before checking into our hotel. B. D
Day 5: We set our sights for home today, planning to arrive this evening with wonderful memories and stories to tell family and friends about our visit to lovely Newport, City by the Sea. B
