Walking the footsteps of Abraham Lincoln in his hometown of Springfield, Illinois!
Day 1: We depart bright and early for our summer drive through Indiana and into Illinois. This afternoon we will arrive in Springfield, the hometown of the legendary President Abraham Lincoln. Our first stop will be at Lincoln’s Tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The Lincoln Tomb is the final resting place for Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary and 3 of their sons, and sits on the edge of the city he called home. Built with donations from across America, the Lincoln Tomb honors the memory of our nation’s greatest president and those who struggled with him toward a new birth of freedom. After our visit, we will arrive at the Drury Inn and check in for the evening. Enjoy the Kick-Back reception and the amenities of the hotel.
Day 2: After we enjoy our breakfast, we will depart for a full day of touring. This morning, we will visit the Lincoln Home National Historic Site which preserves the home and historic district where Abraham Lincoln lived from 1844 to 1861, prior to becoming the 16th president of the United States. The Presidential memorial includes the four blocks surrounding the home and a visitor center. Highlights of the home include rooms where Lincoln practiced law, raised his children, and lived for 17 years. Today, we will visit the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum where Abe’s journey from the backwoods of Kentucky to Washington DC is told in nine gallery settings. Lifelike figures of the Lincoln family greet visitors in the Plaza with the White House as a backdrop for a great photo op before taking the journey through the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. Our dinner is included before our Legends and Lore Walking Tour – a 90-minute lantern lit 10-block walking tour that uses the Lincoln sites as the backdrop for strange and bizarre stories surrounding Lincoln’s life and his death! Learn about his final visit to his law office, his funeral in the old capitol, his Christian beliefs, his phantom carriage, Lincoln’s bizarre visions and dreams, Mary’s seances in the White House and much more. This tour is appropriate for all ages. Return to the hotel after a great day spent with Abe Lincoln! B, D
Day 3: After breakfast, we will visit the Old State Capitol, a reconstruction of Illinois statehouse from 1840 to 1876. This is the location where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous “House Divided” Speech. Enjoy your tour and then we will depart for home. Plan to arrive early this evening, with so many memories to share about Abe Lincoln and the city that he called home. B
