Day 1: We depart this morning for our drive south to Bardstown, voted as one of the Best Small Towns in America. On this two-day getaway you will find out why! Bardstown is the second oldest town in Kentucky, with a Southern spirit that welcomes you with unmatched hospitality. After enjoying lunch on your own, we will visit the very historic and interesting Old Bardstown Village and Civil War Museum. Located on historic Museum Row, the National Civil War Museum is one of the nation’s most comprehensive institutions dedicated to the Western Theater of the American Civil War. The museum complex preserves thousands of artifacts, personal items, and battlefield relics that tell the story of the conflict from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River. At Old Bardstown Village you will step into a preserved 18th-19th Century frontier settlement. This authentic log village includes ten original structures – cabins, a schoolhouse, a tavern, and more – offering a vivid look at early Kentucky life. We will also enjoy a visit to the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral, the first Cathedral, in the United States, west of the Alleghany Mountains. St. Joseph’s was built to welcome pioneers and to serve their spiritual, physical and intellectual needs. Later we will check into our hotel and refresh for this evening. Tonight, we will enjoy dinner and then reserved seats under the stars for The Stephen Foster Story – Kentucky’s longest-running outdoor drama and official outdoor musical. This story celebrates the life of renowned American composer, Stephen Foster, with colorful period costumes, energetic choreography and over 50 of Foster’s most beloved & timeless classics, including Kentucky’s official state song “My Old Kentucky Home”. In case of inclement weather, the show will be moved indoors. D
Day 2: After breakfast, we will visit My Old Kentucky Home, the mansion centerpiece of a 1300-acre plantation completed in 1818 and the inspiration for the state song of Kentucky. Enjoy a guided tour and time to look around the grounds. We will depart after our tour arriving in Louisville in time to enjoy an included luncheon. This afternoon, we will visit Schimpff’s Confectionary, where the 6th generation continues doing what the family has done since 1891, making candy the old-fashioned way, one batch at a time. Enjoy visiting the Candy Museum housing thousands of pieces of American candy memorabilia, representing decades of collecting candy equipment and artifacts. We will depart this afternoon, planning to arrive early this evening anxious to share our experiences in Bardstown with family and friends. B, L
