Join us on this journey through two of Illinois’ most fascinating destinations. Explore Galena’s beautifully preserved historic district by trolley, visit the homes and landmarks connected to Ulysses S. Grant, discover the city’s blacksmithing heritage, and dine at the legendary DeSoto House Hotel. Then travel south to St. Louis for a dinner cruise on the Mississippi River and a visit to the magnificent Gateway Arch. Don’t miss the bus for this exciting new adventure.
Day 1: We begin our journey this morning and travel through the scenic landscapes of Indiana and Illinois, past the outskirts of Chicago, and onward to the charming historic town of Galena, Illinois, where a delightful stay awaits. After we check into our hotel for our three-night stay, we will enjoy dinner at Frank O’Dowd’s Irish Pub, where authentic craftmanship is on display, and we might see talented musicians and entertainers to whom we can clap along! D
Day 2: After our breakfast, we will enjoy a narrated Galena Trolley Tour, featuring historic homes, landmarks, and the city’s distinctive architecture. Learn about the town’s rich history and hidden treasures, including 19th century mansions and the Old Market House State Historic Site. Walk in the footsteps of Ulysses S. Grant during a guided tour of the home where he lived after returning from the Civil War. Did you know Galena is where Grant launched his campaign to become the 18th President of the United States? We will enjoy a luncheon together during our tour and return to the hotel for a relaxing evening. B, L
Day 3: Today we will visit Galena’s Old Blacksmith Shop, where working blacksmiths operate vintage equipment to craft custom items from scratch. We will visit the U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site and U.S. Grant Museum. Here we will learn about Grant’s life, military career, presidency, and connection to Galena. This afternoon will be free for shopping and exploring Main Street. Return to the hotel to refresh before joining your fellow travelers for dinner this evening at the historic DeSoto House Hotel. Built in 1855, this iconic Galena landmark has welcomed notable guests throughout its history, including Civil War generals and U.S. Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. Return to the hotel after dinner. B, D
Day 4: Bid farewell to Galena this morning for another great destination…St. Louis. Upon arrival, we will enjoy a delightful dinner cruise on the Gateway Arch Riverboat, a 19th century replica steamboat. Enjoy dinner, views of the Mississippi River, and an evening of sightseeing from the water. Check into our hotel after our dinner cruise for the evening. B, D
Day 5: This morning we will visit the famous Gateway Arch for a scenic ride to the top to view the St. Louis riverfront and surrounding area. Time will be spent at the Museum of Westward Expansion to learn about the Gateway to the West. Plan to arrive home early in the evening after a wonderful getaway to Galena and more. B
